TeamHealth, a leading clinician services organization, announced today that Lynn Massingale, MD, co-founder and chairman of TeamHealth, was named among the “50 Most Influential Physician Executives and Leaders” by Modern Healthcare for 2017. This is the second consecutive year Dr. Massingale received the distinction recognizing physicians in the healthcare industry who are deemed by an expert panel and their peers to be the most influential in terms of demonstrating leadership and impact.
“TeamHealth’s success is rooted in Dr. Massingale’s commitment to exceptional patient care provided by top clinicians, strong ethical business practices and a steadfast focus on client service,” said Leif Murphy, president and CEO of TeamHealth. “For nearly four decades, Dr. Massingale has played a pivotal role as a company and industry leader. We thank him for his continued dedication and congratulate him on this remarkable honor.”
“I am incredibly proud to represent TeamHealth in a leadership role, and I am honored to receive this distinction,” said Dr. Massingale. “While this accolade is designed to recognize individual leaders, I believe this recognition underscores the passionate efforts of thousands of TeamHealth physicians, advanced practice clinicians and associates who work to improve healthcare every day, in everything we do.”
Dr. Massingale co-founded the predecessor company to TeamHealth in 1979 to staff two hospital emergency departments in Knoxville, Tennessee. He served as founder and chief executive officer of the company from 1979-2009, when he became executive chairman.
Under Dr. Massingale’s leadership, TeamHealth has achieved impressive growth. Indeed, once he set his sights on national expansion, over a four-year period Dr. Massingale effected the largest merger of emergency physician groups at that time while simultaneously leading rapid organic growth. The company’s revenues grew from $70 million in 1995 to $500 million in 1999. He also led the company’s expansion into the hospitalist, anesthesiology, general and trauma surgery, orthopedic surgery and hospital-based obstetrics service lines. The company continues to grow in all sectors, particularly as hospitals integrate multiple service lines with a partner like TeamHealth.
By 2005, TeamHealth’s revenues hit $1 billion, and in 2015 the company reached $3.6 billion. The company’s approximately 20,000 affiliated clinicians now deliver care across 3,300 acute and post-acute facilities and physician groups nationwide. TeamHealth was recognized by Forbes Magazine in 2014 as one of “America’s 100 Most Trustworthy Companies”; by Fortune Magazine in 2015, 2016 and 2017 as one of “The World’s Most Admired Companies”; and by Becker’s Hospital Review in 2015, 2016 and 2017 as one of the “150 Great Places to Work in Healthcare.” TeamHealth clinicians provide care for more than 26 million patients per year.
